What is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis — an inflammation of the gums — is the initial stage of gum disease and the easiest to treat. The direct cause of gingivitis is plaque - the soft, sticky, colorless film of bacteria that forms constantly on the teeth and gums.

How is Gingivitis treated ?

Removing the source of the infection is primarily how simple gingivitis is treated.

  • By brushing and flossing teeth regularly with a toothbrush and flouride toothpaste approved by dentists, plaque build-up can be kept to a minimum.
  • Regular check-ups with a dentist are also important. A dentist is able to remove plaque that is too dense to be removed by a toothbrush or dental floss.
  • Severe gingivitis may require antibiotics and consultation with a physician.
